Northeast Alabama Dyslexia Center
approaches dyslexia from a different perspective. The mental
function that causes dyslexia is a gift in the truest sense
of the word: a natural ability, a talent. Dyslexics are visual,
multi-dimensional thinkers.
They are intuitive, highly creative people and excel at hands-on
learning. Because they tend to think in pictures, it is sometimes
hard for them to understand letters, numbers, symbols and
written words.
Consequently, academics and the learning environment are difficult
for them. This is not because something is wrong with them;
it is because lessons are not taught in the way they think.
Dyslexia is a product of thought and a special way of reacting
to confusion caused by language symbols. It is not limited
to reversals of letters and words--a common misconception.
It is not the result of a genetic flaw or any physical
abnormality.
Dyslexics don't all develop the same gifts but they do
have certain mental functions in common:
- They have an amazing capacity to
utilize the brain's ability to alter and create perceptions
(the primary ability).
- They are highly aware of their
environment.
- They are curious about how things
work.
- They think mainly in pictures rather
than in words.
- They are highly intuitive and insightful.
- They think and perceive multi-dimensionally
(using all the senses).
- They have vivid imagination
